Social Media Influence on Cultural Tourism
Main Article Content
Abstract
Social media shapes how travelers discover cultural places, imagine local life and share experiences after a visit. User-generated images, reviews and influencer posts can increase visibility for museums, craft makers and small communities, but selective imagery may flatten cultural complexity and concentrate visitors at photogenic sites. This narrative review examines the pathways from online content to destination image, travel intention, on-site behavior and subsequent digital word of mouth. A travel-industry survey reports that the share of respondents finding trip ideas on social platforms rose from 35% in 2022 to 61% in 2025; this general travel measure does not isolate cultural tourism or prove causation. The review proposes community-led storytelling, clear attribution, visitor guidance and monitoring of both online narratives and local outcomes. Responsible social media strategies give cultural practitioners control over representation and align promotion with the capacity of heritage places and resident priorities.
